HINGHAM — A 35-year veteran of the Randolph Police Department is dead after he was involved in a rollover crash on Route 3 in Hingham, said Randolph Police Chief Anthony Marag in a statement.

Officer Michael Beal, 61 of Norwell, was off duty when he died of the injuries he suffered in a crash involving another vehicle Saturday morning on Route 3 south after the Derby Street exit, the chief said.

“He was an amazing person and friend to all within this department. This amazing family man leaves behind a wife and eight children,” Marag said. “Please keep his family, friends, and members of the Randolph Police Department in your thoughts and prayers.”

State police officials said the crash involving two vehicles happened shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday on Route 3 south prior to Exit 35, which is for Route 228.

Members of the State Police and Hingham Fire Department arrived on scene and found the victim in the roadway and his car crashed and rested on its roof in the median, according to a statement by Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second vehicle was stationary in the breakdown lane of Route 3 south with heavy front end damage, said the district attorney. The female operator was taken to South Shore Hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County district attorney’s office are investigating the accident.
